A Cornucopia of Stories: The Reader's Harvest

Ah November, the month of thanksgiving. A season to savor stories and celebrate the joy of reading. One might say that God, country, and family are what we give thanks for during this time of year and I say yes, absolutely! But can we also make a little room in our gracious hearts for the gathering of good reads? For the bountiful harvest of books we enjoy this season and every season?

Books! They give us an abundance of nourishment, feeding our souls with a cornucopia of stories—mysteries that puzzle, romances that sizzle, fantasies that dazzle. We imagine, create, learn, dream, escape, empathize. What would we do without them? I know you understand me because you are my people. . . you are a reader.

So let us take a moment to celebrate the stories, giving thanks for every tale. Here’s to the reader’s harvest. Because every great book is something to be grateful for.

Teaser for Echoes of Eden...

In the sequel to Kaya’s story, you will learn so much more about the island of Eden! Secrets, culture, traditions—it’s a whole new world to explore! Here’s a taste from the Harvest Moon Festival, an ancient tradition celebrating Eden’s cycle of protection and rebirth:

Kaya passed beneath an arch woven in the colors of harvest—garlands of dried crimson flowers, golden grains, and burnt orange autumn leaves glowing in the lantern light above her. She breathed in the scent of hay and late-season blooms mingled with the crisp evening air, a slow, deliberate intake bringing a calm to her senses. As she stepped through the arch, the golden threads of her gown caught the amber glow of the lanterns, reflecting the moons and stars stitched into her sleeves and collar. Each step drew her closer to her people. Not elevated on a balcony, but beside them on solid, level ground” (188).

Eden Quote of the Month

Of course right after books on the gratitude list, chocolate is next! I’ve already shared Kaya’s 1st chocolate experience, but her second is just as cute. Here’s just a taste:

“. . . the pure chocolate made her taste buds burst in an explosion of sweetness. She closed her eyes to fully concentrate on the taste and didn’t notice the noises she was making as she chewed each bite until she heard Drew laughing in the background. ‘Oh, um, sorry,’ she apologized, trying to swallow the last piece.’ ‘I guess I got a little carried away.’

Drew talked intermittently between chuckles. ‘No, it's great. I love watching you eat chocolate. It’s a real experience. Do you want more?’"

So fun to connect with readers at the Romance Authors Day at American Fork Library. And even some of my cute kids came!

What I'm reading: The Third Gilmore Girl by Kelly Bishop. If you are a fan of Gilmore Girls, this memoir of the infamous Emily Gilmore is a must-read. Kelly Bishop has had an amazing life and narrates her story. I love just listening to her voice!

The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion, Vol. 6 by Beth Brower. Still an amazing series. I think there are going to be something like 24 volumes so this will probably be on my reading list a lot.

Just finished: The Brothers’ Tangle by Gigi Lynn. I loved this book. It is by a local writer I met at an author event recently. I’ve read a lot of regency romances and this one about a wealthy young woman in the marriage market, tangled between two very different brothers, did not disappoint. Very engaging and a fun read for my Florida trip last week!

Factfulness by Hans Rosling. This non-fiction book is about all the things we think we understand but don’t. Very educational study of many world facts we misinterpret or just get plain wrong! I learned a lot of useful tips about data analysis and how, in terms of solving world problems, we are doing better than we think. It’s a fascinating read (very heavy on data though).

The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon. A superb piece of historical fiction about a real-life mid-wife (Martha Ballardf) in early America (Maine, 1789) who is absolutely legendary as a strong, female character who deserves to be remembered.

About to start: Home Before Dark, by Riley Sager. I’m ready for another thriller. It’s been a minute.
